Philadelphia, PA (November 19, 2020) — Brown’s Super Stores, a family business which operates 10 ShopRite supermarkets and 2 Fresh Grocer supermarkets in the Philadelphia area, the Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC), Salem Baptist Church of Roslyn, and with our newest partner The Roots, we will once again convene to provide Thanksgiving meals for families in need across Philadelphia. We will be joined by numerous community groups, corporations and elected officials as well. During these challenging times, coming together over a meal will be essential to keep our communities and families together and thriving more than ever. Brown’s Super Stores and the Urban Affairs Coalition will distribute 2,000 Thanksgiving Vouchers redeemable for a full Thanksgiving dinner that will feed more than 12,000 individuals citywide, giving them a Thanksgiving meal to remember. Once again, it will be one of the largest distributions in the region ever!
This program will be supported by our generous partners The Roots, who have sponsored 500 meals for families in need, and Black & Mobile who has volunteered to deliver 50 of those meals to families unable to shop for themselves. Our other generous sponsors including Pepsi Co., Glory Foods, Table Talk Pie Co., Bimbo Bread, Pepperidge Farms, Flowers Baking, Schmidt Baking, Verchio’s & Guarino’s Produce, which supply many of the items in this year’s program.
More than 100 community partners from across the city will distribute the Thanksgiving Vouchers to families in need. Additionally, a small team of ShopRite volunteers will assemble the baskets being delivered by Black & Mobile at the ShopRite of Oregon Avenue on Monday, November 23, 2020 from 11:00am – 1:00pm.
ABOUT THE THANKSGIVING BASKET PROGRAM
Each year, the Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC) and our City’s community groups, churches, businesses, and elected officials gather together to join the fight against hunger during the Thanksgiving Season. For 36 years, the UAC Thanksgiving Basket Program has worked to distribute Thanksgiving Baskets to individuals and families in need; providing Thanksgiving meals – a turkey and all the fixings – that feed more than 12,000 individuals each giving season.
For the 37th Annual Thanksgiving Basket Program, UAC is mindful of how difficult 2020 has been for everyone. The COVID-19 pandemic – and the food insecurity and health inequities that it exposed – will mean that the need for a Thanksgiving meal in our communities will be greater than years before. To meet that need, the UAC Thanksgiving Basket Program is, once again, convening community partners to join the fight against hunger this giving season.
While the Thanksgiving holiday is a time of togetherness, we encourage everyone to celebrate safely this year, keeping gatherings small and with the people with whom you live, as recommended by public health officials.
