Position Summary

Working in conjunction and in collaboration with Senior Manager of Technical Accounting, the incumbent leads planning, coordinating, researching and summarizing of technical accounting research and the implementation and application of new accounting standards. Provide technical accounting support and expertise to UGI business units for complex accounting areas including share-based compensation accounting, lease accounting, business combinations, derivatives, divestitures, goodwill, segment determination and other long-lived asset impairment evaluations. Coordinate external audit/review efforts related to technical accounting matters including the various GAAP checklists and compilation/review of the overall analytical review (“OAR”).  The incumbent also develops UGI’s corporate-wide accounting policies and disseminates the accounting policies to all stakeholders within the UGI entities and oversees UGI’s share-based compensation accounting and reporting. This position reports to the Senior Director – Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting and shall also work closely with other departments within the UGI Corporate headquarters accounting groups and accounting leads at all of UGI’s business units.

 

This role shall also provide technical accounting expertise to UGI’s compliance and reporting group regarding required disclosures for new accounting standards. The role will interface with cross functional teams (including Treasury, Tax, FP&A, Investor Relations, Legal representatives). This position’s responsibilities include:

  • Acting as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on complex accounting topics;
  • Researching, advising and documenting technical accounting and reporting matters (GAAP and SEC), including coordinating conclusions and research with external auditors;
  • Monitoring emerging accounting literature and preparing summaries and briefings for senior management;
  • Assisting in the preparation and the presentation of educational materials to worldwide accounting and finance functions;
  • Working with domestic and international accountants to provide technical accounting support for unusual or complex transactions;
  • Monitoring the application of UGI’s accounting policies across all business units
  • Developing and updating UGI’s accounting policies, as necessary; and
  • Overseeing and coordinating the calculation of share-based compensation amounts for UGI and its consolidated subsidiaries, and creating related quarterly and annual disclosures support for share-based compensation using third-party software and the work of third-party consultants.

In addition to the technical accounting responsibilities outlined above, this position shall provide assistance, when required, to the Technical Accounting compliance and reporting team with respect to certain elements of quarterly and annual financial statements provided to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or other external stakeholders.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform research through the use of research tools provided by third-party vendors. Communicate the potential impacts to business unit and corporate senior management, and also external auditors. Plan and coordinate the provision of technical accounting expertise to UGI business units for complex or unusual accounting transactions.  Assist in evaluation and implementation of new accounting standards
  • Work directly with domestic and international accountants to provide technical accounting support for unusual or complex transactions, as required.
  • Oversee and coordinate the calculation of share-based compensation amounts for UGI and its consolidated subsidiaries; prepare share-based compensation budget information to support financial planning; oversee quarterly and annual disclosures support for share-based compensation using third-party software and the work of third-party consultants.
  • Oversee, plan and participate in the development of educational materials and its presentation to communicate changes in accounting to all business units.
  • Develop, monitor and update UGI’s Corporate-wide accounting policies and disseminate them to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Provide assistance, when required, to the Technical Accounting compliance and reporting team with respect to certain elements in the quarterly and annual financial statements provided to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or other external stakeholders.

Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of SEC reporting rules and regulations and GAAP accounting rules.
  • Knowledge and practical use of spreadsheet software packages, primarily Excel and Word.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to perform research on accounting and finance issues.
  • Ability to organize and drive projects to completion.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other functional groups across all organization.
  • Self-starter. Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to write clearly and accurately.
  • Perform analyses of accounting research tools.
  • Ability to  perform detailed research of SEC and GAAP accounting and reporting issues.
  • Ability to apply good judgment with respect to application of accounting rules and regulations to the Company’s financial reporting.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting;
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred; and minimum
  • 7 – 10 years accounting experience; Big 4 experience preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of current SEC reporting rules and regulations and U.S. GAAP accounting rules.
