UAC Celebrates Brown's ShopRite Grand Opening

August 6, 2013

UAC, along with 500 community members and Elected Officials, gathered to celebrate the grand opening of Brown’s ShopRite at 2800 Fox Street on Thursday, August 1, 2013. UAC President Sharmain Matlock-Turner showed her support by hosting a live broadcast of her weekly radio show Financial Voices which airs on 900AM WURD. Sharmain and co-host Steve Sanders, CEO Stoneridge Investments,  interviewed Brown’s owners with Jeffrey and Sandy Brown in addition to elected officials including Congressman Fattah, Councilman Curtis Jones, State Representative Youngblood, State Representative Waters, State Representative JP Miranda, Councilwoman Cindy Bass, UAC Board member Wrenton Wright,  WURD President Sara Lomax Reese, and Vice President of American Heritage Credit Union, Michelle Peterson to discuss how the new ShopRite will add beautification to the neighborhood and create jobs and economic growth for the community.

The 71,000 square foot supermarket anchors Bakers Square, located on the former Tasty Baking Factory site in the Allegheny West section of Philadelphia. The new store has created more than 300 jobs for local residents.

The full service market located at Fox Street and Hunting Park Avenue features an American Heritage Credit Union and QCare, a convenient care clinic operated by Resource for Human Development Family Practice and Counseling Network. Shoppers can also tap into the free services of an in-store nutritionist and application assistance for public benefits.

Brown’s Super Stores has been nationally recognized for opening supermarkets in “food desert” locations. This new Shoprite will be the first market in this area in over 3 decades!

The Bakers Square redevelopment project was the recipient of a 2011 federal grant to assist with economic development activities that provided job opportunities for low and moderate income families in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia.

Brown’s Super Stores is a family owned and operated chain of ShopRite superstores in the Philadelphia area with a strong commitment to the communities it serves. UAC partners with Brown’s ShopRite annually for our Thanksgiving Basket giveaway. Every year UAC reaches out to the City’s most challenged communities and distributes Thanksgiving Baskets to 1,000 needy families.

UAC is glad to support Brown’s Super Stores and salutes them for driving change in Philadelphia communities!
