Coalition Wins First Stage of Digital Media Learning Competition

Date:
January 9, 2012

The HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation recently  announced the chosen organizations for Stage One of its Badges for Lifelong Learning competition, and the Coalition was amongst the winners. The Badges for Lifelong Learning competition is designed to encourage the creation of digital badges that identify, measure, and account for new skills, competencies, knowledge, and achievements for 21st century learners.

UAC submitted for the competition under the Digital On-Ramps Initiative, led by Philadelphia Academies, and is a partner in the project, along with the City of Philadelphia (Mayor's Commission on Literacy, Mayor's Office of Education, and Mayor's Technology Office), Drexel University, Philadelphia Youth Network, and IBM as core partners. Digital On-Ramps (which is still in its discovery phase) will be an on-line and mobile-based literacy and workforce training program for youth and adults. Over a four-year period, this initiative will help thousands of Philadelphians to learn the skills they need to find sustainable employment.

The group now moves on to Stage Two, where they will propose a badge system design and technology.
