CAMPAIGN FOR WORKING FAMILIES ANNOUNCES RECORD-BREAK RESULTS OF FREE INCOME TAX FILINGS

Philadelphia, PA, May 20 - The Campaign for Working Families (CWF) announced last week the results of free income tax filings in Philadelphia for tax year 2012. CWF filed 14,147 tax returns this tax season, which totaled $20,505,268 million in client refunds, beating the amount of tax returns done each year since the CWF was started in 2003.

The tax sites were staffed with 460 IRS-certified volunteers, providing more than 13,819 hours of free tax services to hard working families across Philadelphia.

According to the IRS, the CWF prepared the most returns and provided the most refund dollars of all of the VITA Campaigns in Pennsylvania.

A program partner of the Urban Affairs Coalition, The Campaign for Working Families provides free tax filing assistance so Philadelphia families can maximize federal and state tax credits without paying sky-high fees to commercial tax preparers.

This tax season, the CWF operated 12 community-based tax sites. Philadelphia families earning less than $51,000 and singles with incomes under $20,000 in 2012 were eligible for the CWF’s services.

“Thanks to our volunteers and supporters, we put more dollars then ever into the pockets of low-income families in Philadelphia,” said Mary Arthur, director, CWF. “We were also able to help hundreds of our clients save money by providing direct deposit, prepaid debit cards, savings bonds, FAFSA, public benefit screening and financial products that help build assets.”

In addition to free tax preparing and e-filing, the CWF did:

  • 309 Savings Bonds; totaling $50,500
  • 454 Prepaid Debit Cards
  • 73 FAFSAs
  • 796 Credit Reports

Over the past 11 years, the CWF has prepared and e-filed 129,747 tax returns and brought $211.3 million in federal and state refunds to working families throughout Philadelphia and surrounding communities. By providing this service, the CWF has saved these families an additional $24 million in charges for tax preparation, check cashing fees and interest on loans.
