Program Summary: 

Global Citizen is a non-profit organization dedicated to civic engagement among diverse groups through volunteering, education, community building, service learning, economic opportunity, leadership development, and dialogue. Global Citizen brings together people of all ages and backgrounds through active citizenship and civic responsibility that result in breaking down barriers, building understanding, and fostering ongoing, diverse partnerships.

Read by 4th is a city-wide campaign managed by the Free Library of Philadelphia. Read by 4th brings over 150 partner organizations together with the shared goal of all children reading at grade level by the start of fourth grade.

 The Community Mobilization Working Group is the community branch of the Read by 4th Campaign, and the Reading Captains Initiative empowers individual community members to support families in raising readers their own neighborhoods. Reading Captains share information and resources with other adults in their communities so that their children have what it takes to read at grade level. Reading Captains are the front lines of building a movement to support every child’s right to read and grow the advocates for early literacy across the city. 

Position Summary: 

The Program Manager will work closely with Global Citizen’s Program Director on further developing the Reading Captains Initiative. This involves engaging volunteers, nonprofit organizations, and other community partners to grow and support a corps of community volunteers sharing early childhood literacy information with friends and neighbors.

Key Duties & Responsibilities: 

This role will include the following responsibilities:

Volunteer Engagement and Management

  • Schedule and run training sessions for new volunteers and “Train the Trainer” sessions for existing volunteers to train new ones.
  • Coordinate with trainers to establish goal expectations and to grow recruitment.
  • Update and maintain the data related to the Reading Captains Initiative.
  • Support the development and growth of the Reading Captain Initiative including creating long and short term goals and projections for the Initiative with the Program Director.
  • Coordinate opportunities to expand the Initiative and increase recruitment.
  • Plan two city-wide events to celebrate the work and accomplishments of the Reading Captains on an annual basis. Identify additional opportunities to celebrate and recognize Reading Captains.

Community Organizing

  • Gather support around neighborhood-based meetings, including looking for additional resources and organizations that can support Reading Captains.
  • Coordinate meeting schedules for working groups and neighborhood meetings with multiple stakeholders.
  • Facilitate and coordinate meetings including setting the agendas, finding locations, sending out invitations, and sending out the follow up information.
  • Facilitate communication between and among Reading Captains.
  • Support Reading Captains in their neighborhood based events and projects.

Other Responsibilities

  • Work with Global Citizen staff to expand the scope of Global Citizen’s existing initiatives, including the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service and Year-Round Volunteering Program.
  • Develop strategies for aligning Read by 4th volunteer goals with those of other Global Citizen initiatives.
  • Initiate new partnerships with community-based organizations, and maintain current partnerships.

Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

Job Requirements

  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Travel within the Philadelphia area
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
Desired Experience
  •  Someone who is self-directed with an entrepreneurial spirit
  • A demonstrated interest and knowledge in children’s literacy in Philadelphia  
  • Deep understanding of Philadelphia neighborhoods
  • Demonstrated skill at community organizing and working with/supporting volunteers
  • Event planning experience
  • 1-2 years experience in nonprofit or volunteer work
  • Ability to speak another language
  • Bachelor’s Degree
