Program Summary: 

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) provides essential public health services to residents and visitors of Philadelphia. The Department’s Communications Team works with each division in the department to provide relevant information on health issues to the public, including and especially in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. This position will, until further notice, work remotely.

Position Summary: 

The Outreach Coordinator oversees identifying and maintaining relationships essential to information distribution to traditionally underserved communities (e.g., African-American, Latinx, immigrant, etc.) in Philadelphia. This includes acting as a PDPH liaison to the Mayor’s Office of Public Engagement, the City’s Racial Equity Working Group, and other outreach- and coordination-oriented tasks or working groups to be determined as needed. This position will strongly focus on conducting outreach to support the City’s COVID-19 coronavirus response. The person in this role will be asked to coordinate meetings and events and occasionally present to community organizations. The person in this role is also expected to participate in the development and/or approval of content for PDPH paid media campaigns, earned media campaigns, social media toolkits, websites, and some offline materials.

Key Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Work with existing outreach staff across the Department to learn about the numerous community partnerships that PDPH and the City currently maintain and establish relationships with them.
  • Utilize existing community connections to expand PDPH’s reach into traditionally underserved communities.
  • Identify opportunities to develop new partnerships with community organizations and leaders in traditionally underserved communities.
  • Identify opportunities to disseminate PDPH materials to community organizations.
  • Develop a contact management system for PDPH to share contacts and contact information for key community partners.
  • Represent PDPH on outreach-related coordination groups, like the City’s Racial Equity Working Group and the City Engagement Initiative; identify other opportunities for collaboration with existing working groups and initiatives in PDPH (e.g., the Health Bulletin) and other City and quasi-City agencies (e.g., Free Library of Philadelphia).
  • Work with PDPH Communications Team staff to advocate for, translate, and actualize existing paid, earned, and digital media campaigns to outreach efforts.
  • Prep the Communications Director on all aspects of outreach work and relationship management for monthly executive meetings.
  • Participate in the development of online and offline communications products for the PDPH Communications Team.
Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
  • At least one year experience with community organizing (paid or unpaid)
  • Existing familiarity and demonstrated participation in organizing in traditionally underserved communities
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Public health background preferred
