Program Summary: 
Self, Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been providing services to people for over twenty (20) years. We offer a broad range of essential housing, social service, drug and alcohol treatment, vocational and employment programs, all designed to help individuals achieve self-sufficient and productive lifestyles. We provide these services to more than 7,000 individuals within the Philadelphia area.
Key Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Report to the Director, Food Services, and assist with the planning and supervising of the staff to provide service to the clients.
  • Responsible for providing technical guidance and administrative direction over food planning, menus and serving of meals within the facility as well as direction and training of the staff.
  • Prepare food in accordance with daily posted menu to ensure meals meet dietary requirements and obtain pre-approval for menu changes from supervisor.
  • Monitor the food portion amount to meet all health and dietary standards as outlined in funding contracts and assist in keeping food cost with budgeted amounts.
  • Make sure all work staff meet company requirements regarding personal hygiene, proper dress attire (i.e. hair net, hat, apron, etc.) so that communicable diseases are controlled and health standards are met.
  • Train and supervise to comply with sanitation and health requirements as it relates to meal preparation and licensing standards.
  • Assist with providing leadership to kitchen staff through the assignment of work, monitoring, review of results and technical instruction or training in the absence of the senior staff to ensure food service department functions in an orderly manner.
  • Assist with cleaning of the kitchen and equipment in accordance with the state, city and county safety and sanitation requirements (i.e. gloves, sink, refrigerators, etc.) ensuring the protective guards are in place on slice machine, sharp objects kept in proper place, spills wiped clean immediately to ensure safety, keeping a clean work place as well as satisfying company and agency contractual requirements. 
  • Train and supervise resident crew in presenting the food so it is appetizing and appealing, to enhance the resident’s enjoyment of the meal.
  • Rotate inventory to ensure that food is used before it spoils, so that food cost is at a minimum.
  • Supervise the receiving and verifying of food supplies, unloading of trucks and security of door in the area so that the facility is only charged for merchandise that is actually received and the food services are secure. Forward all invoices to Supervisor.
  • Ensure sufficient stock for meals is on hand and that all stock items are properly rotated, so that food is fresh and spoilage is kept to a minimum.
  • Prepare meals and supervise resident work crew assisting in preparation of meals, making sure meals are prepared on time, served attractively and in proper portion to maintain contract obligations, meet government standards and enhance residents’ enjoyment of the meals.
  • Communicate any maintenance problems, equipment failures, inventory shortages, and resident or staff issues to senior staff promptly.
  • Monitor all resident activity in kitchen and dining room, and take appropriate action to correct any problems, so that corrective measures can be taken prior to a major problem occurring.
  • Complete in service trainings to meet the requirements for continued personal and professional self-development.
  • Package food for delivery to other facilities in accordance with each facility’s needs, transport and deliver food in the manner prescribed and in a timely fashion.
  • Participate in staff meetings by sharing observations and recommendations regarding the facility residents and staff relations to identify, solve problems, and function as a unified team.
  • Maintain confidentiality obtained through job duties regarding employees, vendors, residents, outside agencies, etc. so that sensitive information is only given on an as needed basis.
  • Comply with Self, Inc. policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Comply with facility safety rules; take appropriate corrective actions to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation.     
Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of cooking experience. Familiar with principles of institutional cooking, portioning and sampling of foods, food storage/ stock rotation procedures and typical health requirements/ standards for kitchen cleanliness. Familiar with conversation of menus to volume of food to be prepared.
  • Subjected to frequent standing, walking, stair climbing, bending, lifting (max. 50 lbs.), gross and fine manual dexterity. Must be able to visually observe, understand and interpret resident behavior as well as posses a keen sense of smell.
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in heavy traffic and varied weather conditions including heavy rain or fog.
  • Must be able to work around extremely hot surfaces such as stoves, steam and steam tables as well as cold areas such as walk-in freezers or refrigerators.
  • Will be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions including heavy traffic and unsafe neighborhoods.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies at a moment notice and without hesitation as well as participate in other unanticipated situations and special events.
  • Participation in general staff meetings, department meetings and training as directed.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, tasks-driven and able to work independently and set daily priorities by maintaining a weekly as well as a monthly schedule.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and willingness to assist whenever needed.
  • Must have valid driver’s licensing and motor vehicle record.
