Position Details
Program Summary: 

Self, Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been providing services to some of Philadelphia’s most vulnerable communities for over 30 years. We offer a broad range of essential housing, social service, drug and alcohol treatment, vocational, and employment programs with the goal of supporting individuals achieve self-sufficiency and sustain healthier lives (or improve their quality of life). We provide these services to more than 7,000 individuals within the Philadelphia area.

Key Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Provide transportation for facility, including but not limited to picking up supplies and transporting clients.
  • Prepare and complete vehicle log so that all maintenance needs are noted to ensure the vehicle is safe and ready for the next trip.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of clients while transporting to protect them and others while in transport to destination.
  • Assist immediate supervisor in arranging for vehicle inspections and maintenance.
  • Follow all traffic laws so that the safety of the clients, staff and other vehicle operators are sustained.
  • Physically check vehicle before and after trips to make sure contraband is not being transported
  • Telephone facility to notify arrivals at destinations to maintain communication regarding resident whereabouts.
  • Carry roster in the vehicle containing the names, destination and number of residents to be transported so that all residents are accounted for.
  • Comply with facility safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others.
  • Operate automobile (including lifting equipment) as appropriate to provide client and material transportation.
  • Plan, coordinate and adjust routes to facilitate delivery requirements.
  • Notify immediate supervisor and concerned persons of route/schedule changes. Assure optimum safety of passengers
  •  Maintain vehicle in clean and serviceable condition and perform minor maintenance tasks. This includes checking general physical condition, all fluid levels, tires, lights and related equipment to insure road worthy operation. Report findings to immediate supervisor in writing weekly.
  • Transcribe receipts for fuel, oil, coolant, etc. and maintain mileage records.
  • Must have functional knowledge of automotive equipment, sufficient to detect defective operation of vehicle and report, in writing, to immediate supervisor.
  • Must clean all trash and items left behind after each transport.
Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 


  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience operating a large size vehicle.
  • Must be able to observe clients while driving and prepare for emergencies if needed.
  • Participation in staff meetings, department meetings and training as directed.
  • Must be well organized, detailed-oriented, tasks-driven and able to work independently and set daily priorities.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle record without open moving violations
  • Criminal Background clearance required.


Two (2) years’ experience driving and operating a large size passenger motor vehicle and working in a residential facility with individuals who may have challenges in the following areas: homelessness, substance abuse and mental health or an acceptable combination of equivalent skills and experience.
